OK so you P-platers think you have a hard time from the police and are getting a raw deal
Lets look at some REAL HARDCORE FACTS or some people call them statisics
Statistically P-platers are most likely to:
Modify their cars to be NON-Roadworthy
Drive NON-Roadworthy cars
be involved in Single car FATALITIES
be involved in MULTIPLE FATALITES from a single car
Be at fault in multi vehicle accidents
and most of all DIE, thats right DIE , BE DEAD, fall off the perch, kick the bucket, D.E.A.D!
So when you recieve some attention from the jacks well they are just doing job protecting the community
when you go over 1 km or 100km over the posted speed limit you have enabled the ROE and you can be pulled over as you have now broken the law
The law is there to protect us from ourselves and the police are sworn to serve the community to protect us by upholding those laws which statiscally P-platers like to break (if you disagree see above)
Now if you think that you are unfairly targeted (see above)
Statisically you need to be protected from yourselves more than any group in the community(see above)
So therefore there is an effort to make sure you are not going to become a statisic
I mean the cops would rather slow you down than attend to your corpse in an accident
If you have ever seen a MVA that has resulted in a fatality I aint but I have seen the aftermath and little bits of person are not nice when they are not attached to a person
So dont be a douche on the roads and be safe and accept that you will have a target but dont blame the guys sworn to protect YOU from YOU
Blame your PEERS and everytime they break the law remember they are just adding to the statisics
So change their attitudes and yours towards the people doing what we as a community want them to do

Well said. At the end of the day, the police are just doing their job, same as everybody else. And TBH, i would rather them defect someone for ridiculous mods rather than have you run into my car and have no insurance because of the mods :)

not all p platers are douche bags you cant realy discriminate. i no plenty of drivers at the age of 40 that have highly modded cars and tear around race cars etc saying that im off my p's soon

I'm actually very impressed with the youth of today ... I'm seeing better educated and more mature individuals.
Yeah I sometimes curse at the odd P Plater but I also know that the stats for other age groups isn't exactly glowing considering their age and experience behind the wheel.

i remember when i was young, i used to hate getting pulled up by the cops all the time (having a s/c v6 vs on 19's didnt help). i can understand now why they do it. if anything, its just a reminder to say, we are watching you, if you play up you will get caught.

All I am saying is P-platers need to look at the actions of SOME of their peers to lay blame as to why they get targeted
I dont like hearing kids whine about being targeted
we have heaps of P-platers come to our meets and are probably better drivers than some of the full licensed individuals who attend
but reality is all drivers in general are under MORE survelliance than ever

really? i mostly see p platers swerving while texting, talking on the phone sitting in the right land of the highway doing 140 or 80, rolling out infront of me on round a bouts and stop signs, then slamming on their brakes and waving to say 'sorry'
Young people have gotten stupider over the last few years, im only 25 and can tell you the generation of 17/18 year olds today are far stupider than when i was 8 years ago. Perhaps its because of the area i live in. on the sunshine coast there is the old, the rich, and the poor. there are very few middle class people such as myself. The rich are rolling in it, the poor dont care (generally on the dole, paying $50-60/wk for a government house 2 streets from the beach! why work?!), and the old are well, old.

I can see what mecha is saying, I'm a green P plater and also been in the emergency services for at least 4 operational years and seen the direct result of other p platers being idiots. Either in a minor accidents or with a double fatal involving kids my own age.
Now I'm not saying that I haven't done stupid things before, but I'm noticing alot of 17/18s who just got their Red P plates, just don't care about laws & safety at all and 3 to 12 month license suspensions don't change their attitudes. IMO to combat the problem is mandatory advanced driving workshops in which you get shown how easy it is to loose control of a car and get the Police CIU come in and show photos of what happens when you think you can drift a commodore around a corner at 120km/h.
But, on saying that, some police officers (not saying all police) pick on p platers for the hell of it. Where i live, we have a problem with a constable in the highway patrol who stalks, harasses and even breaks police protoctal to get to p platers. I've had run-ins with this officer and reported him to his supervising officers, only never to hear back about it.
So I can see from both side of the tracks here.
**** you wazza... P-platers are LESS LIKELY to get in an accident then old people. Overconfident bastards.

Statisically NO Dean
While young drivers only make up around 13% of the driving population they account for 25%of all drivers killed on our roads
and you are like 20% of all drivers aged between 18-25 who feel older drivers are a hazard

My best mates had his license suspended twice for stupid driving, I'm talking about 160+ on the M4, now he drives properly. I swear if he hadn't lost his license twice he'd be dead by now and taken a few with him.
On the other hand I've had friends who've lost their license for literally 2 k's over and others that have been illegally defected (revving car to redline to get muffler sound reading, when it's only sposed to go up to around 3 thousand rpm.)
It's unfair yes, and as a P plater I do feel targeted.
But I suppose, after talking to Mecha through PMs and thinking about it, it's worth it if the cops suspend and book 100 P platers unfairly or for blatantly discriminating reasons, if one P plater that is actually a reckless driver out of that 100 turns around, and even if it's from sheer fear of getting suspended again, stops driving recklessly.
Just like my best mate did.
In saying that, I don't believe some cops on the road actually have the best interest of P platers in mind, rather want a promotion for bagging them, but it's a means to a necessary end.
Ah whatever, I've never lost my license.
I'm only accountable for my actions and I'm a very reasonable driver.
Doesn't mean I still won't be sore if I lose my license for something unreasonable, but Mecha's given us the stats.
It's the 1% that ruin it for the 99%, that's the reason all preventative laws are passed.
When it comes to cars we're talking about lives.

In my opinion being on P's and dealing with all the attention that comes with it is just a rite of passage. Really if you think about alot of things in life you have to deal with a small amount of shit before getting to the other side.
Your on P's, your new to driving and its more than likely you want to test out this new ability, police will have more focus due to you because of this. I dont mean you'll instantly go out and have a hoon or you'll just casually drive from A to B, I just know that when I was on my P's every now and then I thought "I wonder if I..."
When thinking back over my time on P's I really just come to one conclusion... Harden the **** up and move on. Eventually you'll be on blacks all this will go away.
On a side note what brought this on Mecha? This P's discussion has been done many times on here so I find it odd you decided yesterday "You know what... P-platers... ****'em!" lol still amusing all the same

I personally can't see the message getting through. I assume most people have forgotten the 5 or so really bad accidents at the beginning of the year. All involved P plate drivers, all involved speed, all involved an impact so hard the car was split in 2, and unfortunately all involved multiple fatalities.
I agree that most P plate drivers do nothing wrong but after those accidents it's not P plate bashing, it's actually fact.
It's sad to see some peoples imaginations outway their ability.
If you do nothing wrong, you won't have an issue. The police may pull you over for a random reason, that's only fair, if you have no illigal modifications, no problems, but if you do, and get fined for it, you call the police pricks!!
Where is the logic in that!! Do stupid things, but don't complain when you get caught.

Not all p platers are douches. Some are, some aren't, like the rest of the driving population. Trading insults won't help. So there!
Having said that, there have been 2 recent single car accidents where pedestrians on the sidewalk were knocked down and injured, and the second a car (the driver) lost control and went into a house, bowling over a group of kids playing in the house. The driver ended up cradling a baby that his car just went over seconds before. No one injured fortunately. The first was a L plater, the second a P plater. Both were low speed accidents and alcohol was not involved.
I imagine the accidents were caused by:
Poor hand-brain-eye coordination, (did these kids do PE in school?) leading to poor vehicle control.
Poor reaction time.
Not knowing the limitations of the car and road, or themselves.
Not knowing the laws of physics.
Not knowing what to do in an emergency.
Thinking driving is like a video game, no one gets hurt and you instantly get a new car if you destroy the one you are driving.
Driving licences were easy to get once, you just filled in a form at the local post office, bingo, you are licenced! You learnt to drive AFTER you got the licence. With heavier traffic on the roads and more complex task required today, we really need many hours on driving simulators and test tracks to get up to speed with car handling and protective/evasive driving before these learners are allowed onto the road, just for everyone's safety.
To play devil's advocate:
Having said all that, this is a free country, and you are quite welcome to blame others and feel the police are victimising you, and drive high performance cars with questionable modifications at their limit on city streets. If you crash and kill yourself you are just removing yourself from the human gene pool and on average the next generation of drivers will be better or more sensible. Just don't take too many innocent passengers/bystanders with you!
I was in the CFA for 7 years and on a Rescue truck for some of it, and I have seen quite a few BAD accidents, Majority of them were aged 25 - 45 not P platers or old people.
Bottom line is, Everyone is partial to Some form of stupid behavior, If you are going to drive like a nut, do it somewhere safe like a track, or somewhere that only you can be harmed. It wouldnt be the first time I have been to and accident where a 40(ish) YO male took out a young family of 4 all DOA's.
Dont drive stupid in towns or on busy roads... if you do, you deserve all forms of punishment.

:stoopid: If they taught kids how to actually drive a car, rather than to pass a test then something may actually work in minimising the P Plate death toll. They can restrict them all they want, but even a 3 cylinder charade can get up to speed (if you have enough distance :)) and kill someone. Make the defensive driving and traffic offenders course compulsory. Offer incentives/rebates for people to do these. I've done both and the defensive driving course transformed my understanding of driving a car and the traffic offenders course opens up your eyes that cars can actually be weapons.
I lost my P Plater mate almost a year ago. Theres speculation about the actual incident but there was no evidence to ellude that speed was a factor. Even though theres evidence another car was involved all we know is he lost traction in the wet going around a corner and hit a pole. If the state actually put some money into teaching people how to handle situations like the one he was involved in he might still be here. Ah well, guess revenue can't be raised through spending money on driver education.
EDIT: and for the record, the day after the accident before we knew the details of the Crash Investigation Report the media threw his story on the front of the local paper stating speed was the factor. Even managed to get another P Plate and put it on the wreck while it was there. After getting abused by his family, a smaller article was featured the day after saying it was unknown what caused the accident. CIR blamed it on conditions and driver error, however there was white paint on his rear quarter panel.
If anyone really is to blame for the overall attitude its the media. While some P Platers are dickheads, geez you cant be a brilliant driver when youre still LEARNING.

Unfortunately you can't "teach" learners how to drive like someone with 20 years of experience. Only 20 years of experience will do that. During that time you have a few accidents, but you learn from them and they get fewer and less severe. Unfortunately the inexperienced (ie younger) drivers tend to go for high performance cars, and when things go wrong, they do so in a big way. Spend the first 10 years of your driving, while you gain experience, in something innocent like a Hyundai Excel, the police will leave you alone and the accidents you have will be minor.

everyone is saying the same thing over and over again and basically you have these main points....
1. cops are more likely to pull over p platers cus cops are ****ed
2. we do not teach people how to drive in this country
3. people who drive like a douche will drive like a douche whether or not on p's
4. people will put illegal mods on their cars cus they dont give a shit regardless of whetert or not p's or full license.... i bet out of everyone here there is just as many people with illegal mods in both catagories......
basically i feel that a p-plater following the law should not be pulled over
and anyone not following should.....
i just got my full license and i will drive how i did b4.... i will do up my car same as i would have b4 nothing has changed...... i thing the p-plater stereo type is more to the fact that young people these days want something different out of a car than young people did 40 years ago...... but this extends past that of p-platers.....

Police can pull anyone over for a random licence check, breath test or vehicle safety check. If you are cooperative and polite, no probs. If you get paranoid and do a sulky "not fair" at them, they WILL make your life difficult! It's one of the big bonuses of being a traffic cop! They will then go back to the cop shop and tell all their mates, and have a good laugh!

I just hate being associated with those bad p plate drivers, im not a 'hoon' and i dont do stupid shit in my car. But when i get off my p's i suppose i will be assosiated with those bad full licence drivers who hoon around and speed and such because i modify my car. I dont hate traffic police, everyone has there own reason for hating the police and if you dont well then congratulations. I just hate being labled a hoon because i am a p plate driver and i HAVE to have the p plate, its not like i chose it. People who are not on there p's still have accidents, modify there cars, have run ins with police, bitch and moan when they get stopped for a defect its not just a p plate thing but because a majority of the traffic are p plate drivers and they speak up it gets heard more often..
im not defending p plate drivers and i support the statistics, i have lost 2 friends to careless driving and they were on their p's, the statistics are scary and true but there are scary stats about non-p plate drivers.

This thread seems to be going around in circles and I think everyone's said what needs to be said...
For anyone having a whinge in this thread... please have another read of the below facts... a few times if you don't get it.
/Thread
