I've noticed a little better economy since replacing the ecv, and the car itself's fuel usage normally says 14ltrs per 100ks in the suburbs. now returning 12.9ltrs a 100k.

is this valve different to the solenoid? mitsushiti said they replaced my EGR last year and today I took it back to them saying nothing had changed and now they are saying they need to replace the ECV solenoid and trying to quote me $275 for it as im 2 months or so out of warranty.. if this is the same shit they are going to change Ill just do it myself!

The EGR valve and ECV solenoid are different things/parts.

The EGR valve controls exhaust gas recirculation (fumes collected from the crankcase), the ECV solenoid controls the release into the intake plenum of unburnt fuel vapours collected from the fuel tank and condensed/stored in the charcoal cannister.

$275 to replace the ECV solenoid is highway robbery, it's a 10 minute DIY job as shown earlier in this thread and a brand new one from the spare parts counter of your local stealership should be no more than $130. I got my replacement one second hand from a member here for $65. Didn't fix my ticking noise problem however as there was nothing wrong with my ECV solenoid to start with!

Just an add on to your description.
EGR is exhaust gas recirculation which takes exhaust gases from the exhaust system and recirculates them back into the combustion chamber to cool the process and decrease some pollution, NOT fumes from the crankcase, that's the job of the PCV system. ( Positive Crankcase Ventilation )

Yep, mixed up the EGR with the PCV there! Too many three letter acronyms!
